Why It MattersLast month we closed our record–setting twenty–first season, which included four regional premieres: Joe Penhall’s racially–charged Blue/Orange, David Lindsay–Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Rabbit Hole, Christopher Shinn’s post–9/11 drama, Dying City, and a major co–production with Little Green Pig Theater, Fistful of Love. And our guest series, Other Voices, has hosted exciting presentations of Warrior Theater’s Hello Penis: A Man-ifesto, two world premieres by Little Green Pig: My Lovely Suicides and Europe Central, an evening with the internet stars of Found vs. PostSecret, both hands theatre’s imaginative new work, holding pattern, Black Poetry Theatre’s acclaimed Black Poetry: The Play, and of course a sold–out run of the magical Joshua Lozoff: Beyond Belief.
Paying the BillsOur audiences have steadily grown over the last few seasons, with strong reviews and word of mouth helping us sell out many performances. But sold–out shows don’t pay all the bills.
In addition to the cost of putting on shows, we have major operating costs: mortgage, utility bills, insurance, staff salaries, equipment, repairs, and more. In fact, ticket income pays only about a third of our expenses. Another third comes from foundations and arts council grants. For the final third we rely on contributions from private supporters.
Your season donation helps keep our building open and supports a season of the most exciting theater in the Triangle. Did you know it takes over $5,000 just to pay the monthly bills, in addition to the $10,000 it takes to produce one Manbites Dog show? About two-thirds of those costs are covered by box office income and by grants. The rest comes from individuals like you who believe in the value of Manbites Dog’s contribution to our community, and want our work to continue.
